I got a call from a guy parked near Santee Lakes. He was visiting family for a few days and his 2024 Lexus RX fob had been acting up the whole drive out. Touch unlock on the driver handle was hit or miss. Sometimes it worked on the first touch, sometimes he had to stand there for three seconds like the car was thinking about it. The start button was fine, engine fired every time. Just the handles.
He had already replaced the battery at home before the trip. CR2032, name brand, he showed me the packaging.
I asked him to walk up to the driver door slowly and watch whether the exterior lights pulsed. They did. The car was seeing the fob. So the key itself was doing its job. We pulled the fob apart anyway, just to look. The battery contact had a very slight bow, not much, but enough that under vibration from highway driving it was probably making intermittent contact. Battery voltage was fine sitting still. Probably lost it in corners or over rough pavement.
Straightened the contact, reseated the battery, cleaned the contact surfaces. Walked every door. Driver handle touch unlock came back immediately and held through a dozen tests.
He did not need a new fob. He needed ten minutes of actual diagnosis. That's most of what I do, honestly. The new key jobs are real, but the "my key is dying" calls are more often this.
