2023 Lexus RX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2023 Lexus RX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out on Beyer Blvd in San Ysidro, a guy flagged me down through a parking lot. He had already paid someone else to replace the smart key on his 2023 Lexus RX. The engine would crank, catch for a second or two, and die. Every time. He had been told the vehicle security system itself was faulty and he needed a dealer visit.

I asked him to pop the door and let me run a quick diagnostic before he committed to a tow. The system was not reporting a hardware fault on the immobilizer side. What it showed was a key registration that had not committed to permanent memory. The previous tech had run through the programming sequence too fast, or with a tool that dropped the connection mid-handshake. The key ID was in there, but loosely, and the system rejected it on startup every single time.

I cleared the failed registration completely, ran the full smart key enrollment sequence at the right pace with the security timer allowed to complete, and then confirmed the new fob was seated in permanent memory before I even let him touch the start button.

Three consecutive starts. Clean every time.

He was relieved in that quiet way people get when something has been wrong for days and then suddenly is not. He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him if the "ECU replacement" route turned out to be the answer. What I charged him was a fraction of that number, and he did not have to tow it anywhere.

The first locksmith was not a bad person. He just had a tool that was not current enough for this platform, and he did not know it.
