2004 Lexus RX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman in Otay Mesa West called on a Tuesday. She had one key left for her 2004 Lexus RX and it was starting to flake. The remote barely responded past arm's length, and she had that low-grade anxiety of knowing she was one bad day away from being stranded.
She had already called the dealer. The appointment was a week and a half out, and she would have to leave the car there for the day. She found me, wasn't sure if a mobile locksmith could actually handle a Lexus, and asked me directly: "Can you really do this in a parking lot?"
I met her at her building near Otay Mesa Road. First thing I did was pop the fob and check the CR2016. It was original, four years of daily use at least, and reading low. I swapped it and tested range. Better, but the car still needed a spare key anyway, so we kept going.
I cut a new blade to match her existing key, connected to the OBD port, and walked through the programming sequence to register the new remote head key to the immobilizer and the remote system. Then the real test: ignition on and hold, every button on the fob, trunk release, doors. Everything confirmed.
She had a working spare in her hand inside forty-five minutes. The dealer would have had her waiting almost two weeks for that. She mentioned it while I was packing up, almost like an afterthought. I hear that a lot.
