A guy in Downtown Oxnard called me about his 2005 X3. His only fob had gotten wet, then dried out on a counter for two days, and now it did nothing. Doors wouldn't unlock remotely, no response at all. He'd already bought a replacement fob online and was hoping I could just program it in.
I met him in a parking structure off Meta Street. First thing I did was open his original fob and pull the CR2032. The cell read low, but more telling was the corrosion on the battery contacts, thin white crust that breaks continuity even when a fresh battery goes in. I cleaned the contacts, seated a new cell, and the original fob came back to life on the spot.
That was the easy part to explain. The harder part was the online fob he'd already bought. We checked it. The part number on the back didn't match what the 2005 X3 takes. It looked close, similar body style, three buttons, but it wasn't the right unit for this vehicle's security system, and programming a mismatched fob on a BMW is not something you push through and hope for the best.
He wasn't thrilled about the online purchase being a wash, but he was relieved the original still worked. I programmed it back in cleanly, tested all three buttons, walked the doors, and confirmed the blade still turned the lock cylinder without binding.
The dealer had quoted him a new key plus programming, separate line items, and a two-day wait for the part to come in. He saved a good chunk and kept his original fob. The online purchase was a lesson, not a repair bill.
