Out near the Del Sol shopping area in Oxnard, a guy with a 2005 BMW X3 called me because he was down to zero keys. His family was sitting inside a coffee shop waiting while he paced the parking lot.
The X3 had CAS2, which I confirmed off the VIN before I even drove out. With no working key, this is bench work. I pulled the CAS2 module from behind the steering column, set it on my ACDP mini with the ICP adapter, and clipped directly to the board without soldering. Full EEPROM backup first, every time, no exceptions. If you skip the backup and a power glitch hits mid-write, you are buying the owner a new module.
Once the read was clean, I ran the key calculation, generated a new key profile, and wrote it back to the CAS2. Then came the sync with the DME, which on these M54-equipped X3s talks through the K-line. His new remote head key, LX8FZV with the HU92 blade, turned over the engine on the first try.
He watched the whole thing from about three feet away, arms crossed, not saying much. When it started, he just nodded once and said "alright" like he had been holding his breath.
The dealer would have wanted a flatbed tow plus a multi-day wait for a VIN-ordered key. He drove his family home instead.
