2016 BMW X3
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2016 BMW X3 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Near College Estates, over by the VFW hall on Saviers, a guy flagged me down in a parking lot and asked if I worked on BMWs. I told him I was already there.

He'd paid another locksmith to make a key for his 2016 X3 about a week earlier. The blade fit, the fob looked right, but the car would crank and immediately die. Every time. The first locksmith told him the immobilizer control unit had gone bad and walked off the job.

I hear that story more than I should.

I connected through the OBD port and pulled the security data. The module was reading clean. The problem was that the previous tech had never read the internal security number out of the engine control unit. On this generation, the key, the immobilizer module, and the engine control unit all have to carry that same number. The programmer had registered the key to the immobilizer module but never completed the third leg. The engine computer had no reason to release fuel, so it shut everything down the moment it saw a mismatch.

I read the security number from the engine side, completed the sync across all three components, and tested it three consecutive times. Clean start every time. I walked him through what I was seeing on the screen so he understood what the first guy had skipped.

He'd already spent money on a job that wasn't finished. What I charged him was still a fraction of what the dealer would have quoted, and it was done in the parking lot in under two hours.
