Got a call from a set designer working out of one of the warehouse spaces along the De La Vina corridor in Santa Barbara. His 1997 Park Avenue wouldn't start. Security light on, solid, engine cranking but no fire. Classic PASS-Key lockout.
He told me another locksmith had made him a key about a week earlier. It worked fine the first few days. Then it started failing on hot restarts. Cold morning, no problem. Drive to lunch, shut it off, come back, and the security light would just sit there glowing.
When I got to his car I pulled out my resistor decoder and checked the key the other guy cut. The pellet was close but off. PASS-Key II uses 15 specific resistance values, and the Theft Deterrent Module on the C-body Buicks has a tight tolerance window. A near-miss can pass sometimes and fail others, especially when heat changes the contact resistance even slightly. That is exactly what was happening.
Cut a new B97-PT key blank with the correct resistance pellet matched to his lock cylinder reading. Tested it through three full heat cycles, start, drive, shut off, restart. No security light, no hesitation.
His remote, FCC ID KOBUT1BT, also had a dying CR2032 causing weak range. Swapped that too.
He thought the whole car was going bad. It was a two-dollar pellet value being wrong.
