2006 Hyundai Azera
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a 2006 Azera?

A long time, if it's made right. The transponder programming doesn't degrade or expire. The weak point is physical: the key blade can wear if you're rough with it or carry it on a heavy keychain that puts stress on the ignition cylinder over time. The plastic key head is another common failure point on keys this age.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. Everything we make is covered under warranty. But on a 2006 Azera, if a freshly programmed key suddenly stops being recognized, the first place to look is the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. That ring reads the transponder every time you start the car, and on vehicles this age the ring or its wiring can develop faults that look exactly like a bad key. The key gets blamed, the ring is the actual problem.

Q: I have a spare key from the previous owner. Will it still work, or does it need to be reprogrammed?

If it was programmed to the car at some point and the car's key memory hasn't been cleared since, it may still work. But "may" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. On a vehicle that's changed hands, there's no way to know what happened to the immobilizer memory without testing it. The only way to verify is to try the key. If it starts the car, you're good. If it doesn't, it needs to be enrolled again.

Q: Can I add a second key if I only have one working key right now?

Yes, and honestly you should. Running a 2006 Azera on a single key is a bad position to be in. If that one key gets lost, broken, or the blade wears to the point it won't reliably operate the ignition, you're calling someone for an all-keys-lost job, which takes longer and costs more than simply adding a spare while you still have a working key in hand.

2006 Hyundai Azera Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call just before 8am from a woman parked on Coast Village Road in Montecito. She worked for a staffing agency and had an assignment starting at 8:30.

Her 2006 Hyundai Azera key had snapped, clean break, right at the bow where the plastic meets the blade. The metal portion was still in her hand but the key wouldn't turn. She was parked, doors unlocked, car wouldn't start, and time was running out.

I was there in under 20 minutes.

I decoded the lock to get the cut, made a new key blade on site, and programmed the transponder chip to the vehicle through the OBD port. The car started on the first try. She pulled out with a few minutes to spare.

She mentioned she had called the dealer first. They told her the earliest they could look at it was the following morning, and she'd need a tow since the car wasn't drivable. That alone would have cost her the placement. Coming out to her on Coast Village, cutting and programming on the spot, saved her the job and came in at a fraction of what the dealer route would have run.

Hyundai Azera Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Hyundai vehicles?▼

We use verified blanks that match the correct specifications for your specific vehicle. On a 2006 Azera, that means the right key blank profile and a transponder chip that the immobilizer will actually accept. The problem with buying a blank online and bringing it to someone is that not every aftermarket blank is what it claims to be. A blank with the wrong chip inside will cut fine and turn the lock fine and the car still won't start.
