Early morning call from a woman near Cold Spring Trail in Montecito. She worked through a staffing agency and had to be at a job site by 8:30. It was 7:45. Her 2006 Hyundai Azera would crank but not fire, and the immobilizer light on the dash was staying solid instead of blinking off.
Classic transponder failure on the TG Azera. The ID46 chip in her key had stopped handshaking with the immobilizer ECU. The engine cranks because the starter circuit is separate, but fuel and ignition get held until the transponder clears.
I got there in about 20 minutes. Decoded the HY18 cylinder with my Lishi, confirmed the wafer pattern, and cut a fresh blank with a new ID46 chip right at the vehicle. Connected through the OBD port to register the transponder to her immobilizer module. The old key's chip was dead, not just weak, so I cleared it from memory and wrote the new one in. Total hands-on time, maybe 25 minutes.
She sat on the curb watching her phone the whole time, counting minutes. When the engine caught on the first turn, she just looked at the dash for a second like she was waiting for it to stall.
