Got a call from a guy near Promenade Park in Ventura. His 2011 Hyundai Azera was giving him the "Key is not detected" message on the dash, and push-to-start wouldn't respond. He had already swapped the CR2032 twice.
When I got there, I popped the fob shell open on the hood. The battery was fresh, sure, but the little spring contact on the negative side was flattened almost level with the board. It was barely touching the cell. Looked like someone pried the old battery out with a screwdriver instead of sliding it. Common move.
I bent the contact back, cleaned both terminal points, reseated the CR2032, and snapped the shell closed. Then I walked the full test: driver handle touch unlock, passenger handle, rear doors, trunk button on the fob, trunk button on the lid, and the push-button start with the brake held. Everything came back.
He stood there watching the dash, waiting for the warning to pop up again. It didn't.
The whole job took maybe fifteen minutes including the drive. He had already called a Hyundai dealer and was looking at leaving the car for a day or two and paying for a tow plus a diagnostic fee before they even touched the smart key. Instead, he drove home from Promenade Park the same afternoon for a fraction of what they wanted.
