Her toddler had spiked a fever and she needed to get home from the pediatrician. Her 2010 Hyundai Azera would not start in the overflow lot near Cemetery Memorial Park in Ventura. Key turning, engine cranking for half a second, then nothing. The immobilizer light on the dash just blinked at her.
It was 6:30 in the evening. Dealer was closed.
She called me and I was about 20 minutes out. When I got there, the kid was asleep in the car seat, flushed and breathing heavy. She was standing outside holding the key like she wanted to throw it.
I connected my IM608 to the OBD port and pulled the PIN from the SMARTRA2 unit. Her original transponder key had a Philips 46 chip that was not registering at all. Corroded battery contacts inside the remote head had leaked enough to kill the chip's signal. The HYN14R blade was fine, but the electronics were done.
Cut a new key on site, programmed the fresh ID46 chip to the immobilizer, and tested ignition three times. Then I walked her through the mechanical backup: if a transponder ever fails, the key still turns the lock cylinder, but the engine will not fire without a recognized chip. No shortcut around that on this system.
From her call to engine running was 44 minutes. She got her kid home and had him in bed by 8. That is the kind of gap between a mobile locksmith and waiting until morning for a dealer appointment.
