Out in Mussel Shoals, the morning marine layer was still sitting low when I got the call. A woman who worked for a staffing agency was in a lot in Ventura, 7:45 in the morning, and her 2013 Azera had gone completely dark on her. Push-button start would not respond. The fob wasn't lighting up the door handles. She had a placement to make by 8:30 and missing it meant losing the job.
I was there in twenty minutes.
First thing I did was pull the fob apart and check the CR2032. It was sitting slightly crooked in the tray, and one of the battery contacts had a faint greenish film on it. Cleaned both contacts, reseated a fresh cell, tested at the door handle. Nothing. So it wasn't just the battery.
Connected to the diagnostic port, pulled the fault from the body control module. There was a stored communication error between the fob receiver and the module, the kind that builds up when the fob signal has been degrading for a while instead of failing all at once. Cleared it, registered the fob fresh.
Walked every function. Touch unlock on both handles. Lock. The other two buttons. Start button with fob in pocket. Start button with fob held close as a backup test. Everything came back clean.
She was pulling out of the lot with twelve minutes to spare. The whole job was about 25 minutes on site.
She mentioned the dealer had been her first call. They told her to have it towed in and plan on leaving it most of the day. She wasn't interested in doing the math out loud, but she didn't have to.
