Saturday night in Santa Paula, near the California Oil Museum, a couple came out of dinner to a dead 2011 Lincoln MKS. Fob did nothing. No chirp, no door unlock, no proximity detection. The message center just sat there reading "No Key Detected."

When I got there I popped the fob open on the hood. The CR2032 was corroded on one terminal, green crust right on the contact. Cleaned that out, dropped in a fresh cell, and the proximity range came right back. Doors responded from three feet away. Push-to-start fired on the first press.
Then I ran the full check. Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. Tested both front door handles for the capacitive touch unlock. Walked to the back of the car and confirmed the trunk release button on the liftgate. Everything responded clean.
The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes, most of that being the drive over. They drove home that night instead of calling a cab and then calling a dealer on Monday. A corroded battery contact on a Saturday night is not a reason to leave your car in a parking lot.
