2011 Lincoln MKS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
It was a Saturday night out near Limoneira, and a couple had come out of dinner to find their 2011 Lincoln MKS sitting dark and unresponsive. The fob had been acting up for a few days - they'd noticed the door handles weren't always waking up on approach - but they figured it would sort itself out. It didn't.
When I pulled up they were still in the parking lot, trying to explain to each other why the start button wasn't doing anything. They hadn't heard of the backup start procedure, where you hold the fob directly against the button. That's not an obvious thing. Nothing on the car tells you it exists.
I walked them through it first, just to confirm the fob hadn't completely failed. The car started that way, which told me the key itself was still alive - just too low on power for the proximity system to pick it up from a distance. Popped the fob open, pulled the CR2032, and the cell had practically nothing left.
Fresh battery in, seated correctly. Then I walked both door handles, checked that the touch-unlock was waking up the way it should from a normal approach distance, and ran through the fob buttons to confirm everything was talking to the car. Proximity range came back solid on both sides.
They drove home that night. Dealer quote for anything involving a smart key on this car runs steep, and they had already been mentally prepared to leave it in the lot until Monday and deal with a tow. That part I was glad to fix.
