2016 Lincoln MKS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and why does it cost more to replace than a regular key?

The 2016 MKS uses an Intelligent Access fob, which is a proximity-based system. The fob communicates with the vehicle continuously when it is nearby, so the handles wake up when you touch them and the start button works without inserting anything. There is also an emergency blade stored inside the fob for the door lock cylinder.

Q: What tools do you actually use to program a Lincoln smart key?

For the 2016 MKS, I use professional immobilizer programmers that communicate through the OBD port to register the new fob to the vehicle's security system. The same session handles key memory so previously lost fobs can be cleared out if needed. For the blade, I use a dedicated decoder and cutting machine so the replacement is cut to the existing lock without needing the original key.

Q: I have a spare fob but I never programmed it. Can it still be added, or is it too late?

Still addable, as long as that fob has never been registered to a different vehicle. An unprogrammed fob sitting in a drawer is not a problem. Programming goes through the OBD port regardless of whether you have one working key or two. Bring whatever you have, working or not, and I can sort out what is already registered and what needs to be added or cleared.

Q: My MKS starts fine but the passive door handles stopped responding to the fob. What is going on?

This comes up on the MKS and it is not always the fob. The passive entry handles have capacitive sensors that can get gunked up from sunscreen, wax buildup, or just daily grime. Wipe the handle surface down and retest. If one handle works and the other does not, that points to the non-working door's sensor or wiring rather than the fob itself, because the start button and the working handle are still seeing the key fine.

2016 Lincoln MKS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Storke Ranch, a travel nurse on a 13-week assignment called me on a Monday morning. She had parked her 2016 MKS the night before, and by morning the fob was not waking the car up.

Handles were dead, dash showed a key-not-detected warning, and the car would not start. She called a Lincoln dealer and they told her Friday at the earliest, possibly longer if they needed to order the fob.

She was driving herself to hospital shifts. Friday was not an option.

I was at her apartment that afternoon. The original fob had a battery that read low on the tester, so I swapped the CR2032 first just to rule it out cleanly. The car still was not seeing the fob. The fob itself had taken some damage from being in a bag with keys, and the internal antenna contact had shifted. That fob was done.

I cut a replacement blade to the vehicle, registered the new Intelligent Access fob through the OBD port, and walked every function: passive entry on both front handles, start button recognition, lock and unlock. Then I handed it back and had her run the handles herself so she knew it was solid, not just my word.

She drove to work Tuesday morning. The dealer quote and a potential tow bill stayed hypothetical.

Lincoln MKS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

Three things. First, a real business name, a verifiable physical address, and consistent reviews on Google. Scam operations run dozens of different phone numbers and names that all route to the same call center. Second, ask for a firm price on the phone for your specific vehicle. If they quote one number and add fees when they see it is a Lincoln, that is a bait-and-switch. Third, ask for their California BSIS license number.
