2012 Lincoln MKS
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement smart key last on a 2012 MKS?

The programming does not expire or degrade. Once a fob is enrolled to the vehicle, it stays enrolled unless someone actively wipes the key memory. Battery life on a CR2032 in normal use typically runs one to three years depending on how often the proximity system polls the fob passively. The shell is usually what fails first, not the electronics inside it. Quality housings on these Lincoln fobs hold up for years of daily use.

Q: What if my new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call us. Everything we program is covered under warranty. That said, when a properly enrolled key stops working on a 2012 MKS, the fault is more often on the vehicle side than the fob. The immobilizer can throw a lockout condition where the key is fully valid but the car will not complete the start cycle.

Q: My 2012 MKS shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is fresh. What is going on?

Fresh battery and still getting the warning is a known pattern on these. A few things cause it. First, battery contact. If the previous dead battery sat in there long enough, the spring clips inside the fob can take a slight set and lose firm contact with the new cell. Pop it back open and press the clips down gently before reseating the battery. Second, antenna range. The 2012 MKS uses door handle antennas to detect the fob passively.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2012 MKS. Can you still make a replacement?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 2012 MKS is a standard job. It requires diagnostic equipment at the OBD port to perform a security access sequence, wipe the existing key memory, and enroll the new fob fresh. There is no onboard self-programming shortcut for this system. The job takes longer than a spare-key add because of the security access timing built into the process, but it is fully doable on-site in Goleta without a tow to the dealer.

2012 Lincoln MKS Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She called from the parking lot of a dance studio off Hollister Village, over in Goleta. Her daughter's recital was two hours away, the costumes were locked in the back seat of the 2012 MKS, and the fob had gone completely dark. Not intermittent, not weak. Nothing. The dealer told her next-day earliest.

I was there in twenty minutes.

Got the door open, got her inside the car. Plugged into the OBD port and pulled up the key system. The fob battery was reading nearly flat, and the vehicle had dropped the key from its memory, likely after a series of failed proximity attempts on a dying cell.

Put a fresh CR2032 in the fob first, which is always the move before anything else. Then ran the security access sequence through the scanner, re-enrolled the fob, and walked every function: door lock, unlock, start button detect, and the mechanical backup blade just to confirm it turned clean.

Engine running. Forty-eight minutes from her call.

She had time to stop for water bottles before the recital. The dealer and their next-day appointment never came up again.

Lincoln MKS Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Lincoln vehicles?▼

We use OEM-spec blanks that match the factory FCC ID, the correct transponder chip, and the right frequency for the specific vehicle. On the 2012 MKS, the fob pairs with Ford-platform keyless entry hardware, which means verified Ford-origin blanks work identically to Lincoln-branded units. The only real difference is what is printed on the housing.
