What matters is that the chip and the antenna coil match what the immobilizer expects, and that the fob shell is built well enough to survive a few years of daily pocket use. Cheap aftermarket housings on Lincoln fobs are a known weak point. Button contacts fail, the battery clip gets loose, and then owners think the programming went bad when the housing just fell apart. That said, when a properly enrolled key stops working on a 2012 MKS, the fault is more often on the vehicle side than the fob. The immobilizer can throw a lockout condition where the key is fully valid but the car will not complete the start cycle. A key-not-detected warning on the dash, or a start button that lights up but never fires the engine, are both signs to look at the vehicle system rather than assume the fob went bad.

We troubleshoot the actual cause. Sometimes it is a fob. Sometimes it is a module issue, a dead battery in the car affecting the control system, or a loose connection at one of the door antennas. We do not just hand you a new fob and call it done.

My 2012 MKS shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is fresh. What is going on?

Fresh battery and still getting the warning is a known pattern on these. A few things cause it.

First, battery contact. If the previous dead battery sat in there long enough, the spring clips inside the fob can take a slight set and lose firm contact with the new cell. Pop it back open and press the clips down gently before reseating the battery.

Second, antenna range. The 2012 MKS uses door handle antennas to detect the fob passively. If one antenna has a loose connection or the module lost sync after the battery fully drained, the car may not pick up a valid fob even though the fob itself is fine. That shows up as an intermittent warning or a start button that sees the key sometimes and not others.

Third, if the key was in a wallet sleeve or near other electronics long enough, the fob's internal sync can drift. Re-enrollment through the OBD port fixes that. It is not a hardware failure, just a pairing issue.

I lost both keys to my 2012 MKS. Can you still make a replacement?
