A CX-7 owner texted me at 6:40 from the Oxnard Transit Center lot, already frustrated. He'd missed his train. The fob was dead, the car wouldn't acknowledge anything, and he'd never noticed the emergency insert blade hidden in the bottom of the smart key housing. I worked it with some penetrating lubricant, let it soak, and it turned. Once I was in, I pulled my diagnostic tool and connected through the OBD port to check key status. Both his registered fobs were still in memory. Nothing was wiped, nothing was corrupted. This was not a reprogramming job. It was a dead CR2025 and a cylinder that had never seen lubricant.
Swapped the battery, made sure the contacts were seated correctly, cycled through all four buttons, walked both doors, tested the start. Everything came back. He caught the next train with about 45 minutes to spare.
The dealer part would have been three days and whatever they charge at the counter. He got it handled in a parking lot before 8 AM.
