A line cook at a restaurant over in Oxnard Shores called me mid-shift because his 2011 CX-7 was parked in a narrow alley behind the kitchen. Both keys gone. One lost weeks ago, the other fell out of his apron pocket somewhere between the walk-in and the dumpster.
The alley was tight. His CX-7 was wedged between a grease dumpster and a delivery van with maybe two feet on each side. He called the Mazda dealer first. They told him to get the car to them. He asked how, with no key. They suggested a tow truck. No tow truck was fitting back there and he knew it.
I parked on the street and walked the alley with my bag and the VVDI2. Plugged into the OBD-II port under the dash, pulled the immobilizer data from the 4D63 80-bit system, and started the all-keys-lost procedure. The security module on these has a timed reset, so there is a window where you wait and the car just sits there thinking. The cook went back inside and plated two orders while I programmed the new NHY8-67-5RYA fob and cut the emergency insert blade.
Tested all four buttons, checked push-button start, locked and unlocked from ten feet. His car never moved an inch.
He got back to work. I walked out the way I came in.
