2004 Nissan 350z
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my 2004 350z to the dealer if I have no working keys?

No. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment can handle this at your location. Dealers ask you to tow because they need the vehicle in their bay to connect their diagnostic system. That's a dealer workflow problem, not a technical requirement that applies to a properly equipped mobile tech. The 2004 350z is old enough that the job does not require factory server authorization or credentialed gateway access the way some newer vehicles do.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 2004 350z?

On site, plan for roughly 30 to 45 minutes. The immobilizer records need to be cleared, the new key has to be cut to the vehicle, and then the transponder gets registered. On a 2004 model the process is well-documented and there's no lengthy timed countdown built into the sequence the way some later Nissan platforms have.

Q: My 2004 350z starts fine but the lock and unlock buttons on the remote-head key stopped working. What's going on?

This is a common split failure on the 2004 350z remote-head key and it trips people up because the two functions run independently. The transponder that communicates with the immobilizer and the remote that talks to the body control module are doing separate jobs inside the same physical unit. First move is the CR1616. These cells are thin and the contacts inside the fob shell can lose their grip over time, especially if the fob has been dropped.

Q: Can I program a second remote-head key myself on a 2004 350z, or do I need a tech?

You need a tech with the right equipment. The 2004 350z does not have an owner-accessible onboard programming sequence for adding keys the way some older domestic vehicles do. Registering a new key requires connecting to the vehicle's diagnostic port and going through the immobilizer registration procedure. Buying a cut and unregistered key online won't get you past that step. The car simply won't start with an unregistered key, no matter how well it's cut.

2004 Nissan 350z Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman parked near one of the shops in Downtown Santa Paula. She needed a spare key for her 2004 350z and had done her homework before dialing.

She mentioned she'd looked up my license number, confirmed it was active, and checked that the business name matched. Her last locksmith had handed her a receipt with no company name and a phone number that went nowhere. She wasn't doing that again.

I appreciated it. That kind of diligence keeps the fly-by-night operators honest, or at least visible.

The 350z remote-head key is a combined unit, so cutting and programming happen together. The factory fob ID matched what I was working with, the CR1616 inside was still holding a charge, and the job went cleanly. She watched the whole thing from a few feet away, which I always prefer.

She mentioned the dealer had given her a number to replace the key. I told her what she owed me. She said she'd saved a good chunk, asked if I had a card, and took two.

Nissan 350z Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2004 350z. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2004 350z is a job we handle on site. The process involves reading the immobilizer data, clearing the stored key records, cutting a new remote-head key to the vehicle, and registering it so the car will start. Any previously lost fobs are wiped out of the system in that process, so they can't be used to start the car afterward.
