I got a call from a guy parked off a side street in North Fillmore, somewhere near the older residential blocks on the north end. Late. He was an overnight stocker and his shift started in an hour. His only key to his 2008 350z was gone. Checked his pockets three times while we were on the phone. Not there.
He didn't have his registration on him, and he'd never heard the word VIN out loud before. I told him to walk up to the driver's side of the windshield and look down at the base of the glass where it meets the dash. He found it in about thirty seconds. Then I had him open his insurance app, which had his registration, which confirmed ownership. That was enough for me to start pulling up the right key blank and getting my tools prepped before I even left.
When I pulled up, he was sitting on the curb next to the car. The 350z is low to the ground and he looked like a tall guy folded in half trying to stay calm. I got to work under the parking lot lights. The remote-head key for this car is a one-piece unit, so I was cutting the blade and programming the transponder and fob functions all from the same key. No separate fob to deal with separately.
The all-keys-lost procedure on this car requires clearing the existing key memory and registering new keys fresh, which takes a few extra minutes compared to just adding a spare. I walked him through why it takes longer than he expected. Once the new key turned the ignition and the fob locked and unlocked without hesitation, he let out a breath like he'd been holding it the whole time.
He drove to his shift. The dealer would have been closed, and even if they weren't, they'd have needed a tow and a wait. He called me instead and saved himself a serious chunk.
