A smog check station near the Omer Rains Bike Trail in Ventura called me about a 2016 Juke that another locksmith had walked away from. The owner brought it in for a smog test, but the real problem was the key. The previous tech attempted an all-keys-lost procedure, the car battery sagged mid-programming, and the NATS (Nissan Anti-Theft System) module threw a fault and locked the immobilizer into a hard error state. The other guy packed up and left.
When I got there the dash was showing "Key System Error" and the engine would not crank. I connected my jump pack to the battery terminals first to hold voltage steady, because that is exactly what went wrong the first time. Then I pulled fault codes with my IM608 and found stored NATS codes in the BCM, a leftover from the power interruption during the security handshake.
I cleared the faults, confirmed the BCM was back in a state where it would accept registration, and started a clean programming sequence through OBD. His Intelligent Key, the 3-button CWTWB1U808 with part number 285E3-1KM0D, registered on the first attempt. Push button start, door handle proximity, lock and unlock from the fob, all confirmed.
The whole job ran about an hour and a half because of the cleanup from the botched first attempt. Normally a Juke key replacement is closer to 30 or 40 minutes. I showed the smog shop guys what a voltage drop during programming actually does to the NATS module so they would recognize it if they ever saw it again. The owner drove home for a fraction of what a dealer tow and reprogram would have cost him.
