My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for me. I carry the extraction tools to pull the broken piece without wrecking the cylinder.

One thing worth knowing on the Juke specifically: the ignition cylinder on these has tight tolerances, and if a key snapped under load, the wafers inside may have taken some damage even before I arrive. Once the fragment is out, I assess the cylinder before cutting anything new. If it is still clean, I can decode what is left of the broken blade or pull the cut from your vehicle's lock data and have a working key made on site. If the cylinder itself got chewed up in the break, that is a separate conversation, but we handle that too.

What exactly is a smart key, and how does it work on the 2017 Juke?

The Intelligent Key fob on your Juke does a few things at once. It handles keyless entry through the lock and unlock buttons, and it carries a transponder that talks to the vehicle's immobilizer when you push the start button. The fob also contains an emergency metal blade folded inside, which lets you get into the car mechanically if the electronics fail completely.

When you press the start button with your foot on the brake, the car's antenna ring reads the transponder in the fob and checks it against what is registered in the system. If it matches, the immobilizer releases and the engine starts. If it does not match, or if the fob battery is too dead to respond, you get a key warning on the dash and nothing else happens.

That is also why a half-programmed fob is such a specific kind of frustrating. Engine start and remote entry are enrolled separately in the registration process. A fob that only got partway through will start the car and leave the buttons dead, or vice versa. Full enrollment covers both.

My Juke is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I try first?

Start with the CR2032. These fobs go through batteries faster than people expect, and a low battery on the Juke's Intelligent Key will trigger a warning before the fob stops working entirely. Swap in a fresh one and test.

If the warning comes back even with a new battery, try this: hold the fob directly against the start button and press the brake. There is a backup inductive reader built into the button area for exactly this situation. It bypasses the normal RF signal and reads the transponder at close range. A lot of Juke owners have gotten home this way when the fob was nearly dead.

If neither of those works, do not assume the fob is dead yet. A weak 12-volt battery in the car itself can interfere with the Intelligent Key antennas and produce the same warning. Check the car battery before replacing the fob. If everything checks out and the warning is still there, that is when the antenna ring or the fob's internal transponder may be at fault, and that is a diagnostic job.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 Juke. Can I program it myself?

No. The Intelligent Key system on the Juke requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There is no button sequence, no ignition turn trick, no DIY relearn for this system. That kind of onboard self-programming exists on older Nissan models with a conventional key in an ignition cylinder. Push-button Intelligent Key vehicles need a programmer connected to the OBD port to write the new fob into the system.

The fob you bought online is probably fine as hardware. It just needs to be registered. Bring it, or have me bring one, and the programming is what makes it work.

Can you make a key if I have lost all the keys to my 2017 Juke?

Yes. All-keys-lost on the Juke is a job I handle directly. It takes longer than adding a spare to an existing working key, because the system has to be reset before any new fob can be enrolled. That reset has a timed sequence built into it, so the appointment runs longer than a simple spare, typically 45 minutes to an hour on site.
