1995 Pontiac Bonneville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a mechanical key and what does replacement involve?

A mechanical key is a cut metal key -- no electronics inside, no chip, nothing to program. Replacement means cutting a new blade that matches your locks. For a 30-year-old car like the Bonneville, the best approach is decoding the lock directly rather than relying on the original factory key code, because the cylinder wears over time and the code on record may not reflect what the lock actually needs now.

Q: Do I need to be there when you make the key?

Yes, at the start and end. I check your ID and registration against the vehicle before anything gets cut. After that you can go about your day. When the key is ready I'll find you, we test it together in the ignition and the door lock, and you're done.

Q: My 1995 Bonneville ignition is worn and the key is hard to turn. Can you still make a key that works?

Usually yes, and this is actually a common situation on cars this age. A worn ignition cylinder means the wafers inside have shifted from their original positions. If I cut a key strictly by the factory code, it may not match what the cylinder is actually reading anymore, and you end up with something that binds or doesn't turn at all. The fix is to decode the cylinder as it sits right now and cut to that.

Q: I only need one key for an older car like this. Is it worth getting a spare made at the same time?

Worth it. I'm already there, the cylinder is already decoded, and cutting a second key while I'm set up takes almost no additional time. On a mechanical key car this old, losing your only key means a lockout or another service call. A spare lives in your house, costs you very little extra on the same visit, and you never think about it again.

1995 Pontiac Bonneville Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in the Madera area of Simi Valley. He'd lost his only key for a 1995 Bonneville, the kind of car that just sits in the driveway doing quiet, reliable work and never asks for much attention until it does.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him they couldn't cut a key for a car that old and pointed him somewhere else. That somewhere else was a hardware store that made him a key by code, and it didn't turn the ignition cleanly. He was frustrated by the time he found me.

I pulled up, decoded the ignition cylinder directly, and cut a fresh key to match what the lock was actually reading after three decades of use. That's the difference between going by a number on paper and going by the physical truth of the cylinder. The key turned like it belonged there, which it did.

He'd burned half a day on other options. The whole thing took me about twenty minutes once I was on site.

Pontiac Bonneville Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 1995 Pontiac Bonneville key have any buttons or a remote?▼

No. The 1995 Bonneville uses a straight mechanical key with no remote, no fob, and no buttons. It's a metal key that turns in the ignition and the door locks. That's it. If you want keyless entry on one of these, it was sold as a separate add-on module at the time, with its own separate remote that has nothing to do with the ignition key itself.
