Got a call from a guy out near Corriganville Movie Ranch in Simi Valley. His 1996 Bonneville SSEi wouldn't start. Cranked fine, no fire. The SECURITY light on the dash was just sitting there, solid, staring at him.
He had already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in and quoted him a wait of several days just to look at it. He wasn't thrilled.
I pulled up, checked the key blade first. The resistor pellet was there but it had a film on it, years of pocket lint and hand oil. Cleaned the pellet, cleaned the contacts inside the column where the two little pins read the resistance value. Turned the key. SECURITY light cycled off after about three seconds and the 3800 fired right up.
Then I dealt with the actual reason he called, which was the remote. His KOBUT1BT fob, part number 15732805, had a cracked case and a dead CR2032. Swapped in a new remote, fresh battery, ran the on-board programming sequence on the driver door lock switch to pair it. Tested lock, unlock, trunk, panic. All four buttons responded clean.
He sat in the driver's seat and just kept locking and unlocking the doors with the fob, like he was making sure it was real.
Whole visit was about 25 minutes. No tow, no waiting room, no multi-day dealer hold. Just the fix, at his car, for a fraction of what they wanted.
