I got a call from a guy over in Bridle Path in Simi Valley. He'd had the 1998 Bonneville sitting in his driveway for a couple weeks while he chased down a fob issue. His remote had just stopped doing anything - no lock, no unlock, nothing. He'd already tried a fresh CR2032 from the drugstore and it made no difference.
When I got there, he handed me the fob and I could feel the housing flex where it shouldn't. The back clip had been pried off at some point and the plastic tabs were gone, so the two halves were just sitting against each other. Every time he pressed a button, the board was shifting slightly off the contacts. Not a dead fob. A loose one.
I had a replacement fob shell in the van. Transferred the board over, seated everything correctly, and synced it back to the car. Ran through all four buttons at the door. Everything came back.
He asked about the dealer almost as an afterthought. I told him what that road usually looks like - ordering the part, waiting, the trip there and back. He nodded like a man who had already done that math and was glad he called instead.
