Got a call from a guy near the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. His 1998 Bonneville was sitting in a parking lot, cranking strong but refusing to start. The SECURITY telltale on the instrument cluster was blinking steady.
He had already replaced the CR2032 in his KOBUT1BT remote thinking that was the problem. Lock and unlock worked fine after the battery swap, but the engine still would not catch. Two different things happening, and he did not know they were separate systems.
The issue was on the PASSKEY III side. The PK3 transponder in the key blade was not authenticating with the BCM. On these H-body Bonnevilles, the theft deterrent module reads the transponder through the ignition lock cylinder antenna. If the resistance or signal drifts, the BCM tells the PCM to kill fuel and injector pulse for a ten-minute lockout. You just sit there.
I pulled up to where he was parked, connected through the OBD-II port under the dash, and ran the relearn procedure. Cleared the existing key data from the BCM, re-registered the transponder, and waited through the timed security relearn cycle. The SECURITY light went solid, then off. Cranked and fired.
He had been reading forums about people bypassing the whole PASSKEY III module with resistors, which works but kills your theft protection permanently. Didn't need any of that. Just the right diagnostic handshake, done in the parking lot, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him over the phone.
