2005 Pontiac Bonneville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What does the FCC ID tell you about my 2005 Bonneville key?

Nothing, because this key doesn't have one. FCC IDs are for radio-frequency remotes. The 2005 Bonneville transponder key has no wireless transmitter, so there's no FCC ID associated with it. The factory FCC ID only matters on vehicles with a separate key fob. For your car, what matters is the transponder chip inside the key and whether it's been properly registered to the immobilizer. That's the ID that counts.

Q: Do I need to bring my 2005 Bonneville somewhere to get a new key made?

Not with us. We come to wherever the car is -- your driveway in La Colonia, a parking lot, a job site, wherever. The mobile unit carries the cutting equipment and the programming tool needed for this car. We decode or measure the key, cut a new blade, and program the transponder on the spot. The whole job typically runs about 30 minutes. No tow, no wait time, no sitting at a dealer for days.

Q: My Bonneville cranks but won't stay running. Could it be the key?

Yes, and it's one of the more common misdiagnoses on these cars. When the immobilizer doesn't recognize the transponder, the engine cranks and catches for a second, then shuts off. It mimics a fuel or ignition problem well enough that people end up chasing the wrong repairs. If your key is a replacement that was cut but never programmed, or if the transponder chip inside the original key is damaged, that crank-and-die pattern is a strong indicator.

Q: Can I program a second key myself so I have a spare?

There's no reliable DIY sequence for adding a transponder key on this vehicle without a programming tool. Unlike some older GM models that had an onboard relearn procedure you could do with two working keys and the ignition switch, the 2005 Bonneville's immobilizer system generally requires a dedicated OBD-based programmer to register a new key. If you already have one working key and want a spare cut and programmed, that's a quick add-on when we're already on site.

2005 Pontiac Bonneville Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to La Colonia on a Tuesday morning. Guy's 2005 Bonneville was sitting in his driveway, wouldn't start. He had a key, the key fit, but the engine just cranked and died. Over and over. He thought it was a fuel issue, maybe a pump.

I asked him one question: where'd the key come from? Turned out his original had snapped at the base of the blade a few weeks back. A buddy of his had taken the broken key to a hardware store and got a new blade cut. Fit the lock, turned fine, but nobody programmed the transponder. So the immobilizer was doing exactly what it's supposed to do -- seeing an unrecognized key and killing the fuel system before the engine could catch.

I pulled up to the driveway, decoded the cut off the cylinder, made a fresh key, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port right there in front of his house. He watched the whole thing from his front step.

First start after programming, the car fired right up and idled clean. He stood there for a second like he was waiting for it to die again. It didn't.

He told me the shop he'd called first mentioned fuel pump diagnostics. That would have been a long, expensive road to the wrong answer.

Pontiac Bonneville Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2005 Pontiac Bonneville key have a fob or a battery?▼

No. The 2005 Bonneville uses a transponder key, which is a standard ignition key with a chip inside the plastic head. There is no remote, no fob, and no battery. Lock and unlock is done the old-fashioned way, with the key blade in the door cylinder. If someone told you this car takes a fob with a coin cell battery, they were looking at the wrong vehicle.
