2002 Pontiac Bonneville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I don't know the FCC ID for my 2002 Pontiac Bonneville. Does that matter for getting a replacement key?

Not really. The FCC ID applies to remote fobs, and your ignition key is a transponder key with no remote built in. To cut and program your replacement key, what matters is the vehicle itself: year, make, model, and access to the OBD port. I show up with the right blank for this application and go from there. You don't need to track down any ID numbers beforehand.

Q: Do I need to bring my 2002 Pontiac Bonneville somewhere to get a key made?

No. I come to you. The car can be in your driveway in Mar Vista, at your job, in a parking lot, wherever it is sitting. My van carries the cutting equipment and the programming tools to handle the full job on site. No tow, no appointment at a shop, no half-day waiting room situation.

Q: I have one working key for my 2002 Bonneville. Can I make a spare without going to the dealer?

Yes, and this is actually the easier scenario. With one working key present, the car can use its onboard relearn process to accept a new transponder key. That means the job goes faster and costs less than an all-keys-lost situation. If you're down to one key, don't wait until it breaks or gets lost. Getting a spare made now, while you still have that working key, saves you the harder all-keys-lost procedure later.

Q: My 2002 Bonneville cranks fine but won't actually start. Could it be the transponder key failing?

It can be. On this generation, if the immobilizer doesn't recognize the key, the engine cranks but cuts fuel so the car won't fire. A key that's been damaged, has a cracked chip inside the head, or was never properly programmed will do exactly that. Other causes can overlap, things like a weak battery or a fuel issue, but if your key is worn or has taken a hit, the transponder is worth checking.

2002 Pontiac Bonneville Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Mar Vista, I got a call from a guy who had just moved and couldn't find his spare key anywhere in the boxes. He had one key left, the original, and it was worn down enough that he was starting to worry about it. He wasn't locked out yet, just being smart about it.

He'd already called a dealer. They quoted him a wait of several days for the key to come in, then another appointment to program it. He didn't have that kind of time with a new place to settle into and a commute already stressing him out.

I pulled up to his driveway in Oxnard with the blank already in the truck. Cut the key blade to match his locks, ran the programming sequence through the OBD port to enroll the transponder, and then did what I always do: tested it in the ignition, tested it in the door, made sure the car started cleanly and didn't hesitate. No warning lights, no crank-and-stall, nothing weird.

The whole thing was done before he finished unpacking the box he was working on. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted, and he didn't burn a workday doing it. That's the job.

Pontiac Bonneville Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2002 Pontiac Bonneville key have a fob or remote?▼

The key itself is a transponder turn key, meaning it has a chip inside the head that communicates with the immobilizer when you start the car. There is no remote or fob built into the key on this setup. If your Bonneville came with a separate keyless entry remote from the factory, that remote is a standalone unit and is a separate item from the ignition key. For the key itself, there's no battery, no buttons, no fob housing involved.
