2003 Pontiac Bonneville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Does the dealer really require a tow if I have no key?

Usually, yes. If you have no working key to drive it in, most dealers won't send anyone to you. You arrange the tow, drop the car, wait for their service queue to open up, and then wait again while they source the key blank. We skip all of that. The work happens at the car, wherever it is, without you paying for transport on top of the key.

Q: What do I need to show you to prove the car is mine?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. We pull the VIN off the dash or door jamb to confirm we're cutting to the right vehicle. Takes a few minutes on site. Same standard a dealer holds you to, just without the appointment, the waiting room, or the paperwork delay.

Q: My 2003 Bonneville cranks fine but won't actually start. Could this be an immobilizer issue?

It's one of the first things to check. When the immobilizer doesn't recognize the transponder in the key, the engine cranks normally but fuel or ignition gets cut before it fires. It feels like a fuel pump or spark problem, which is why a lot of people go chasing the wrong thing first. If you recently had a key made somewhere and this started right after, there's a good chance the key was cut but never programmed.

Q: Can I program a second key for the Bonneville myself, at home?

Not on this one. The 2003 Bonneville transponder system doesn't have a DIY onboard relearn sequence available the way some simpler systems do. Programming the transponder requires a tool that communicates through the OBD port. If someone online is selling you a key blank and promising a button sequence or an ignition-cycling trick to pair it, that's not going to work here.

2003 Pontiac Bonneville Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the water over in Mandalay Beach.

He'd had a locksmith try to cut him a key the week before, somewhere else, and the cut was close enough to turn in the door lock but the car wouldn't start. Just cranked. He thought the Bonneville had developed a separate ignition problem on top of everything else and was ready to have it towed.

When I pulled up, he showed me the key. The cut looked passable at first glance, but the transponder had never been programmed. Whoever made it either didn't have the right equipment or didn't know this generation needed the programming step. The immobilizer was doing exactly what it was supposed to do.

I plugged into the OBD port, ran the programming sequence, and the car started on the first try. He stood there for a second just looking at the dash like he expected it to quit again.

He'd already paid someone once for a key that didn't work. This time it was done right, at his car, before he handed over anything. That's the part that matters most to me. You see it start, you keep the key.

Pontiac Bonneville Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm stranded with no working key. Can you come out to me in Mandalay Beach?▼

Yes. That's the whole point of how we work. Call us, tell us where the Bonneville is, and we come to you. We carry the key blanks and programming equipment for this vehicle in the van. You don't need a tow, you don't need a ride to a dealer, and you don't need to wait for a service appointment. We cut and program on site, and you watch the car start before we're done.
