2001 Pontiac Bonneville
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is a transponder key and why does it matter for my 2001 Bonneville?

The key has a small chip inside the head. When you turn it in the ignition, the immobilizer reads that chip. If the chip isn't there, isn't programmed, or isn't recognized, the engine cranks but won't stay running. It fires and dies fast, usually within a second or two. That's not a fuel or spark problem, that's the immobilizer doing exactly what it was designed to do. A hardware store can cut the blade shape. They can't program the chip.

Q: Do I need to be home the whole time while you work?

Just be there at the start and the end. I check your ID and registration before touching anything, and I want you there for the final test so you can see the key start the car yourself. In between, most people go back inside. The job doesn't take long once I'm set up.

Q: I still have one working key. Can a second key be added without a programmer?

On this generation of GM vehicles, there is an onboard relearn sequence that can register an additional key if you already have two working programmed keys. If you only have one working key, that sequence won't run and you need a programmer to add the second one. Most owners don't know the cutoff is two keys. They try the procedure with one working key, it doesn't work, and they assume the procedure is broken or doesn't apply to their car.

Q: My 2001 Bonneville cranks but immediately stalls. Could it be the transponder key failing after years of use?

It's possible. The chip in an older key can degrade, especially if the key has been on a heavy keychain with a lot of stress on the head over time, or if it's been near strong magnets or heat repeatedly. The immobilizer reads the chip on every start, so a weak or damaged chip produces exactly that crank-and-stall symptom. Before assuming the worst, try your spare key if you have one.

2001 Pontiac Bonneville Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Marina West, Oxnard, I got a call from a guy who'd been sitting on a spare key he bought online for about three weeks. Said he watched a few videos, tried the ignition-turn relearn sequence, and the car just wouldn't cooperate. Engine would crank, die, crank, die. Classic immobilizer rejection pattern on these older GM full-sizers.

He'd already paid for the blank. The key blade was cut at a local hardware store, close but not quite right, which was its own problem. By the time I pulled up, he was ready to just tow it to the dealer.

I decoded the existing working key on the spot, got a proper cut done, then programmed the new key through the OBD port. The engine fired on the first try and held idle the way it's supposed to. He stared at the dash for a second like he was waiting for it to stall out.

The dealer quote he'd gotten was steep. What he paid me was a fraction of that, and he didn't have to leave the driveway.

Does the 2001 Pontiac Bonneville key have any remote buttons?▼

No. The 2001 Bonneville transponder key is a turn-key only. There are no remote buttons, no lock or unlock, no fob battery. It goes in the ignition and starts the car. If you want remote entry, that would be a separate key fob that operates independently from the ignition key on this generation.
