Downtown Ojai on a Saturday evening. A guy called me from the parking area off Ojai Avenue, next to one of the restaurants there. He had a 2013 Ram 2500 and no working key. He had a fob, but the truck would not respond to it at all. No lock, no unlock, nothing. He had tried two fresh CR2032 cells already.
He was visiting from out of town and had dinner plans in about forty minutes.
I pulled up and he handed me the fob. The shell had taken some real abuse. This was a work truck, and the fob had lived in a pocket with metal hardware and grit for a long time. I opened it up and the board had a visible layer of fine dust packed around the battery contacts. The contacts themselves had developed a light corrosion layer, the kind that builds up slowly and does not wipe off with a finger.
Cleaned the board, treated the contacts, reseated a fresh CR2032 with the clip properly tensioned, and snapped the shell back together. Tested lock, unlock, and the remaining buttons. All of it came back.
Then I checked the key blade itself, because a fob that takes that kind of neglect usually has a worn blade to match. It did. Cut him a fresh one on site.
He made his dinner reservation. Did not need a new fob, did not need to wait until Monday for a dealer. Just needed someone to show up and actually look at the thing instead of quoting a replacement automatically.
