Mira Monte, before 5am. A guy texts me that he's got a blade stuck in his ignition and zero working keys for his 2017 Ram 2500. He's a trainer, first class starts at five, and he's standing in the gym parking lot holding half a fob.
The blade had snapped at the pivot. The fob body was in one hand, the blade was stuck in the cylinder. That's the all-keys-lost scenario nobody plans for, and it almost always follows the same pattern: bought the truck used, got one key, kept meaning to cut a spare, never did.
When I got there I extracted the broken blade from the cylinder first. Then I looked at the fob body. The circuit board was still intact, which mattered. I rebuilt the key into a new housing, cut a fresh blade to the vehicle, and programmed it to the truck using my diagnostic equipment. Because the original board was readable, the process went faster than a true all-keys-lost from scratch.
He made his class. He also left with a working key instead of a truck sitting on a lot waiting for a dealer to open and find an appointment slot three days out. The dealer comparison came up on its own when he asked. I told him what they typically charge. He just nodded.
