2018 Ram 2500
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and why does my 2018 Ram 2500 use one?

It's a single unit that combines the ignition key blade and the keyless entry fob into one piece - the fob body is the head of the key. Your 2018 Ram 2500 uses this setup with five buttons and a CR2032 battery built into the fob head. The key blade starts the truck mechanically and the transponder chip inside communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer to confirm it's an authorized key. The fob side handles your remote functions independently.

Q: How does a mobile locksmith compare to the dealer for this job?

The dealer process for a 2018 Ram 2500 key typically means scheduling an appointment, sometimes a tow if you're already locked out or have no working key, proof of ownership verification, and then waiting on parts if they don't stock the exact fob. Programming is done in-house with factory tooling and the bill reflects all of that - parts, labor, shop time, and overhead.

Q: I have a spare key but it only starts the truck - the fob buttons don't work. What's going on?

Common situation on these trucks, especially with keys that came with a used purchase. The remote head key has two independent systems inside it. The transponder handles starting and gets programmed one way. The RF transmitter for the lock and unlock buttons gets paired separately to the receiver.

Q: Can I program a second key myself to have a spare?

Not on this truck. The 2018 Ram 2500 remote head key requires professional programming equipment to enroll. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works here. Get a spare done while you still have one working key - all-keys-lost situations take more time and cost more than adding a second key to an already-working system. I can come to you in Ojai or Oak View and have it done on site.

2018 Ram 2500 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Oak View sits just outside Ojai proper, and I get calls out that way more than people expect. This one came in on a Saturday afternoon from a guy who'd been ranching on the same parcel his family had worked for decades.

He had one key for his 2018 Ram 2500. One. It went through the wash in his Carhartt jacket, and while the shell survived, the fob stopped transmitting and the truck threw a key-not-detected warning every start cycle.

He'd already ordered a replacement fob online. It showed up, looked right, and did absolutely nothing. That's when he called me.

I pulled up to the property and he had the new fob sitting on the hood still in the packaging. Looked correct. Problem was, a replacement remote head key for this truck has to be programmed to the vehicle before it does anything at all. A blank fob from any source is just plastic and metal until the truck's security system accepts it. The cut has to match and the electronics have to be enrolled - those are two separate steps, both required.

I decoded the door lock mechanically, cut the blade to match, then connected through the OBD port and ran the programming sequence to enroll the new fob. Tested every button, confirmed the truck started clean, walked him through checking it twice.

He asked why the dealer wanted him to tow the truck in and wait until Tuesday. Honestly, I don't have a great answer for that. The job took about forty minutes in his driveway.

Ram 2500 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why is Ram 2500 key replacement so expensive?▼

A few things stack up at once. The remote head key on a 2018 Ram 2500 isn't just a key blade - it has a transponder chip that has to be registered to the truck's immobilizer and an RF transmitter that has to be paired to the receiver module. Both steps require professional programming equipment. You can't do either with a blank fob and a YouTube video.
