A vendor was packing up after an outdoor event near Meiners Oaks when his key blade snapped off inside the door lock of his 2016 Ram 2500. The blade broke clean at the base after years of heavy daily use.
He'd already called another locksmith before he called me. That one told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out, then replaced, along with new keys. He was looking at a painful bill and a truck that might not look the same afterward.
He found me and I drove out to him.
The broken blade fragment was still seated in the lock. I used a specialized extraction tool and worked it out carefully, reading the wafer surfaces as I went so I could decode the cut without needing to pull the cylinder. No drilling. No scratches. The lock stayed exactly as it was.
Once I had the cut decoded, I transferred the electronics from his cracked original fob shell into a fresh housing, cut a new blade to match, and programmed the whole unit to his truck. Tested every button. Tested the ignition. Done.
He mentioned the other locksmith's quote before I left. My total was a fraction of what he'd been told to expect. Destructive entry is a last resort. On a Ram 2500, a snapped blade almost never requires it.
