Got a call from someone at the RV storage yard near Coal Oil Point Reserve in Goleta. She had a 2020 Ram 2500 with a cracked smart fob. The housing had split clean in half from being dropped on concrete, and the emergency blade was rattling around loose inside.
The dealer quoted her a full replacement fob and said that was the only path. No mention that the electronics inside were still perfectly fine.
I met her at the yard and popped my ACDP on the OBD port to back up the RF hub immobilizer data, just standard practice before I touch anything on these fifth-gen Ram trucks. The AES 128-bit encryption on the Sentry Key system does not play nice if something goes sideways, so I always grab that backup first.
Opened the broken fob on her tailgate. The PCB board and the Hitag AES transponder chip were undamaged. I moved everything into a fresh aftermarket shell, seated a new CR2032 correctly, and clicked the emergency blade into the new housing.
Then I walked the whole fob: lock, unlock, remote start, panic, tailgate release. Pushed the start button with the fob in my pocket, on the dash, and held against the steering column. All good.
She got her working key back for a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and the actual electronics never changed hands.
