A Westlake Village customer called about a cracked fob on her 2002 Celica. She was over on one of the quieter residential streets off Lindero Canyon, and the fob had been held together with a rubber band for about two weeks.

I pulled up, set up on the hood, and opened the fob. The circuit board inside was clean. No corrosion, no cracked solder joints, no water damage. The battery contacts were solid. Whatever was wrong was entirely cosmetic.

I moved the board and battery contacts into a new shell, seated the button pad correctly, and closed it up. Then I walked through every button at the car: lock, unlock, and the third button, all checked against the actual doors. Everything responded clean.

The electronics inside that fob were never broken. The dealer price was for a complete unit because that is the only way they sell them. Sometimes the fix costs a fraction of what they quoted because the part that actually failed is just the plastic.
