Got a call from a woman in the Poinsettia neighborhood in Ventura. She was at the Costco lot with her 2005 Celica and one dead key. Not dead battery dead. The key turned, the starter cranked, and the engine caught for half a second then shut off. Classic immobilizer rejection. The THEFT light on the dash was blinking steady, which on the seventh-gen Celica means the ECU saw a key but did not like the transponder response.
She had already called the dealer. They wanted the car towed in and quoted her a wait of several days just for the key to come in.
I drove out with my Smart Pro and a TOY43 blank with a 4D-67 chip ready to go. Connected through the OBD-II port, pulled the immobilizer seed data from the 93C56 EEPROM on her Celica's immo box, and registered the new transponder. Cut the key on my Condor XC-Mini right on the hood. The whole thing, cut and programmed, took about 25 minutes.
She watched me do it and kept looking at the dash expecting the THEFT light to come back. It did not. Key turned, engine held, no blink.
Her separate remote still worked fine with the old CR2032. The problem was never the remote. It was the transponder chip in the key head losing its handshake with the immobilizer. One new key, done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost her in towing and parts alone.
