Sunday morning near Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. A woman with a 2007 Volkswagen Touareg had come back from setting up her booth at the flea market across the way and the smart key was completely dead. No button response, no proximity unlock, push-to-start ignored her. The VW dealer was closed until Monday and her day was already planned around being right there.
I was the number that answered on a Sunday. Got to her in about 40 minutes.
First thing I did was pop the fob and test the CR2025. Stone dead. But I already knew from the symptoms that a fresh battery alone probably was not going to do it. When a Touareg KESSY module loses communication with the key long enough, the transponder sync can corrupt. The module sits at address 05 on the diagnostic bus and it needs to re-learn the key, not just see a new battery.
I built a replacement smart key using my VVDI Key Tool for the Megamos 48 chip side, then programmed the full fob through OBD, matching it to the KESSY and the immobilizer. Four-button KR55WK45032, proximity entry, push-to-start. Walked every door handle for passive unlock, tested the trunk release, and confirmed start range from outside the vehicle.
She ran her booth all day and drove home that evening. The dealer would have been Monday at the earliest and a good chunk more.
