2013 Volkswagen Touareg
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I spot a scam locksmith before I make the call?

A few things that show up consistently on VW owner forums and locksmith complaint threads: They quote a number on the phone, then triple it in your driveway. The excuse is always something like "extra programming fees" or "special chip required. The key they hand you barely functions. Buttons work one out of ten presses. The blade binds in the cylinder.

Q: Will the replacement flip key work exactly like the original?

Yes. We program the transponder side so the engine starts and we program the remote functions so all four buttons respond. The blade gets cut to your specific vehicle. We walk through every function on site before we pack up. One thing worth knowing from VW-specific forums: incomplete or improperly attempted programming on this generation can create headaches that are harder to undo than the original problem. Using the right VW-compatible diagnostic tools and following the correct procedure matters.

Q: My 2013 Touareg shows a key warning on the dash but the car still starts. What is going on?

This comes up on Touareg forums more than people expect. A key-not-detected warning that appears without blocking the start usually points to one of a few things: a battery that is low enough to cause inconsistent reads, a fob that has lost its remote pairing while the immobilizer side is still intact, or a contact issue inside the fob housing. The immobilizer authorization and the remote functions are handled separately on this system.

Q: I found a replacement flip fob online for cheap. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2013 Touareg does not have a self-programming sequence for this fob. No ignition-cycle trick, no button combination. Professional diagnostic equipment is required to register the fob to the vehicle. If you bought one online, that is fine. Bring it to us and we can program it. Just verify the factory FCC ID on the fob matches before you buy, and make sure the battery type is CR2032.

2013 Volkswagen Touareg Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Moving day does not pause for a lost key.

A couple in West Simi Valley was at the PODS storage lot early on a Saturday morning, combining households after getting married. Everything they owned was either in the container or staged next to it. Somewhere in one of those boxes was their only key to the 2013 Touareg. Container pickup was scheduled for noon.

They had about three hours, one Touareg, and no key.

I got to the lot inside an hour. The Touareg uses a flip key with a high-security blade, so I decoded the door lock cylinder on site with the right Lishi tool and cut a fresh blade on my machine right there in the lot. Then I ran the add-a-key procedure through the OBD port using VW-specific diagnostic equipment. The four-button flip fob programmed clean: lock, unlock, and the other two buttons all tested live before I closed my bag.

I told them the original key, if it turned up during unpacking, would still work. Add-a-key on this system does not erase what is already registered. That seemed to settle something for them.

They were back to loading in under 45 minutes. The dealer was not part of the conversation, but I know what that appointment would have looked like: a multi-day wait, a tow if they could not drive it in, and a bill that would have stung on top of moving costs.

Volkswagen Touareg Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Volkswagen vehicles in California?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, which is the state agency that regulates automotive locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance. For a vehicle like the 2013 Touareg, that credential matters beyond just paperwork. The immobilizer system on this generation requires proper diagnostic access and the right VW-compatible tooling.
