On a Touareg, some owners on forums have reported being told to add buffer time because the key is sourced differently than mainstream models.

Two separate systems live in that one housing. The blade and its transponder chip handle starting the car: the immobilizer reads the chip when you turn the ignition, and if it doesn't recognize it, the engine won't run. The remote portion handles lock, unlock, and the other buttons over radio frequency. Those two sides are independent. A dead battery kills the remote functions but the transponder side can still work in the ignition, as long as you can get inside the car first, which is where the emergency blade comes in.

A replacement has to be cut to your vehicle and then registered to the immobilizer through diagnostic software. A key that's cut correctly but not registered will fit the ignition and turn, but the car won't start.

On top of that, dealers bill for the diagnostic session and key code retrieval separately from the key itself. It shows up on the invoice as a labor charge even if the technician is at the keyboard for half an hour.

First, check that the battery is seated flat and the contacts are clean. The battery tray on the flip fob is small and the contacts can lose tension over time, especially if the old battery sat dead for a while. A new cell in a slightly sprung tray will read as low or absent.

Second, if the fob went fully dead for an extended stretch, the immobilizer may have logged a communication fault. The key can still be registered and valid, but the system wants to see a clean handshake before it clears the warning. That usually needs a diagnostic read to confirm the key is still fully enrolled and to clear the stored fault.

Third, if neither of those explains it, there's a known behavior on this generation where the fob needs to be held closer to the steering column area to wake the system if the battery is fresh but the remote signal is weak. Try holding it directly against the column before concluding the key needs to be replaced.

Can I buy a replacement fob online and have it programmed, or does it have to come from VW?

You can buy an aftermarket or used fob with the correct factory FCC ID for the 2012 Touareg, and in many cases it can be programmed to your vehicle. It does not have to come from the dealer.

The catch is that the blade still needs to be cut to your specific car, and the fob still needs to be registered through proper diagnostic equipment. An unprogrammed fob you bought online is a shell until that step is done. Some used fobs also come with the blade already cut to a previous owner's vehicle, which will not match your locks, so double-check what you're buying before assuming it's ready to use.

Short answer: buying the hardware yourself can save money on parts. You still need a tech with the right software to finish the job.
