Guy in the Texas Tract neighborhood in Simi Valley called me on a Tuesday night. He had just landed after a late flight, walked out to the airport economy lot, and his 2012 Touareg sat there ignoring the fob completely. Dead CR2032. No remote lock, no remote unlock, no push-to-start wake-up. He had never once used the emergency blade hidden inside the flip key housing.
He is a documentary filmmaker. Shoot starting in four hours across town. He called the VW dealer first. Earliest opening was Thursday. Then he called a tow company and they wanted to drag the whole car to the dealer. Then he found me.
I got to the lot in under an hour. Showed him how to pop the blade out of the NBG010180T housing and find the mechanical lock cylinder behind the door handle cap. Got the door open. Inside, I connected my IM608 II through the OBD port and read the immobilizer module. His key was still fully registered to the car, no corruption. The problem was just the dead battery killing the RF signal and the passive start handshake.
Swapped the CR2032, cleared the communication fault code in the comfort module (address 46), and tested all four buttons plus push-to-start. Everything came back clean. I tossed a spare CR2032 in his camera bag so he would have one next time.
He made his shoot on time. The whole job took less time than the dealer spent telling him they were booked.
