I got a call from a Royal/Kadota-area resident on a weekday evening. He was a traveling musician who had pulled off near the highway outside Simi Valley after a gas stop. The Touareg would not restart. He had a show three hours away and soundcheck in five. Both VW dealers he called were either closed or not taking walk-ins.

When I got there, the fob battery tested fine. The problem was the circuit board inside the fob itself. The board had failed, which is a different job than a battery swap or a lost key. On a Touareg, a working transponder chip from the original fob can sometimes be read and the data transferred to a fresh unit, which avoids the longer all-keys-lost process and saves real time. That is what I did. I pulled the transponder data from the original, built up a new fob using a verified blank, cut the blade on site, and ran through the immobilizer pairing with my diagnostic tool.
Then the part that actually matters: I tested the ignition start, walked all four buttons, and checked remote range from across the parking lot. Everything confirmed.
He was back on the highway in under an hour. The dealer was not an option that night. I was.
