A traveling musician pulled off the 118 near the Cochran Street corridor in Simi Valley. His 2017 Touareg wouldn't restart after a gas stop. He was between shows, next venue three hours away, soundcheck in five. Weekday evening. Every VW dealer within range was either closed or not taking walk-ins.
He found me online and called from the pulloff.
When I got there, I popped his fob open on the hood. The CR2032 was fine. The issue was the circuit board inside the IYZVWTOUA housing. One of the micro-solder joints on the button contact had cracked clean through, probably from living in a pocket with a carabiner. The remote side was dead, and without the remote wake signal, Kessy wouldn't handshake, so the dash just sat there reading "No key detected."
I pulled the transponder data from his dead fob using my VVDI2, cloned the Megamos AES chip into a fresh 4-button flip blank with the correct HU162T blade profile, cut the key to his lock, and paired it through the OBD port at address 46. Tested ignition start, all four buttons, lock and unlock range from 30 feet out, and the panic.
Under an hour, roadside, done. He sat on the bumper tuning a ukulele the whole time, calm as anything. When I handed him the key he just nodded and drove off toward his gig.
Dealer hours didn't matter. He was already gone.
