2017 Volkswagen Touareg
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key hold up?

A properly built key on a 2017 Touareg should last years with normal use. The transponder chip and the fob electronics are durable. The weak points are mechanical: the flip-blade pivot pin can loosen with heavy use, the plastic keyring loop is a known crack point, and the shell halves can separate if the fob gets dropped repeatedly. VW owners on forums describe both of those failure modes pretty regularly on this generation of fob.

Q: What if the new key has a problem after a few weeks?

Call me and I come back. Every key I build is covered under warranty. If it loses remote function, stops starting the car, or develops any issue under normal use, I fix it or replace it. I test every function before I leave the job, including ignition start, all remote buttons, and range. If something slips through, that is on me, not on you.

Q: My Touareg remote works sometimes and not others. Is the fob failing or is it something else?

Intermittent remote function on the 2017 Touareg is one of the more common complaints I hear, and it usually points to one of three things: a CR2032 that is getting weak but not dead yet, a slightly loose battery contact inside the fob, or radio interference in the area where you are trying to use it.

Q: Can I add a spare key for my 2017 Touareg myself, or does it always need a shop?

It needs diagnostic equipment. The 2017 Touareg does not have an onboard self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat the way some older, simpler VW models do. Adding a key requires a tool that can communicate with the immobilizer through the OBD port and properly register the new fob. There is no ignition-cycle trick that works here. If you bought a blank online, you still need someone with the right equipment to pair it to the car.

2017 Volkswagen Touareg Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a Royal/Kadota-area resident on a weekday evening. He was a traveling musician who had pulled off near the highway outside Simi Valley after a gas stop. The Touareg would not restart. He had a show three hours away and soundcheck in five. Both VW dealers he called were either closed or not taking walk-ins.

He found me on Google and called from the pulloff.

When I got there, the fob battery tested fine. The problem was the circuit board inside the fob itself. The board had failed, which is a different job than a battery swap or a lost key. On a Touareg, a working transponder chip from the original fob can sometimes be read and the data transferred to a fresh unit, which avoids the longer all-keys-lost process and saves real time. That is what I did. I pulled the transponder data from the original, built up a new fob using a verified blank, cut the blade on site, and ran through the immobilizer pairing with my diagnostic tool.

Then the part that actually matters: I tested the ignition start, walked all four buttons, and checked remote range from across the parking lot. Everything confirmed.

He was back on the highway in under an hour. The dealer was not an option that night. I was.

“The gentleman was amazing. He programmed and cut two keys with the fob in about 10 min. The dealership wouldn't help us and he came in clutch. Would definitely recommend.”

Volkswagen Touareg Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Volkswagen vehicles?▼

We use OEM-spec blanks that match the factory fob for your specific vehicle, verified against the factory fob ID, battery spec, and blade profile. On the 2017 Touareg specifically, cheap aftermarket fobs are a real problem. Locksmiths on VW forums have documented cases where low-cost blanks either fail to pair with the immobilizer or program fine initially and then drop out after a few days because the transponder chip inside does not meet spec.
