A Heritage Valley homeowner called me on a Tuesday. Gated community in Fillmore, HOA with strict vehicle access rules. The tow company he'd already tried couldn't get approval in time to come through the gate, so his 2006 S80 was just sitting there.
He'd replaced the CR2032 himself the week before, which was the right instinct, but the fob still wasn't responding consistently. Sometimes it would lock the doors from a few feet away. Sometimes it did nothing. Then one morning it stopped starting the car entirely and he was done troubleshooting.
I got access the easy way, drove in when a neighbor was leaving. Walked up to the S80 with my bag and a cutting machine on a cart. First thing I did was open the fob and check his battery swap. The CR2032 he'd put in was seated fine, but the positive contact had a slight outward bow from the old battery sitting in there too long. Not enough to lose power completely, just enough to cause intermittent contact.
I straightened the contact, reseated the battery, and tested range. Better, but the start problem didn't clear. The key had lost its pairing to the Central Electronic Module, probably from the electrical interruption during his swap, or it had been drifting for a while and the battery issue was masking the real problem.
I connected through the OBD port, read the module data, cleared the dead key registration, and programmed a fresh replacement fob. Cut the blade to his vehicle on the cart machine right there in his driveway. Tested lock, unlock, all five buttons, and confirmed a clean start.
He hadn't moved the car in three days. The whole job was done before his neighbor got back from wherever she went. He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him. I kept that part short.
