2007 Volvo S80
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to me in Fillmore?

Most calls in and around North Fillmore get a response within 30 minutes depending on where I am when you call. Everything for the S80 job travels with me: the key blanks, the fob shells, CR2450 cells, cutting equipment, and Volvo-capable programming tools. There's no waiting on a parts order and no shop bay to queue up for.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made today, or do I have to wait like at the dealer?

Same-day is the standard here, not the exception. Volvo dealers routinely treat key replacement as an order-in job. Owners on forums report waiting anywhere from a few days to several weeks for the parts to arrive, and that's before the programming appointment even gets scheduled. If you're already locked out or down to zero keys, a multi-week wait isn't a solution. I stock the blanks and carry the tools, so the job happens the day you call.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2007 S80. Can I program it myself?

No. This generation of Volvo does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for the proximity fob. There's no ignition-turn trick, no button combination. Programming goes through the diagnostic port using software that talks directly to the vehicle's security module, and the module has to authorize the new fob before it works. The fob you bought online is just a blank shell until that step happens.

Q: My S80 fob works sometimes and fails other times. What's actually going on?

Intermittent behavior on this fob usually points in one of two directions: a CR2450 that's on its way out, or a contact issue inside the fob itself. The CR2450 sits in a holder and if the contacts have any corrosion or the cell is slightly unseated, you get inconsistent signal. Start there. Pop it open, reseat the battery, clean the contacts.

2007 Volvo S80 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a text from a guy in North Fillmore who had pinned himself into a bad spot. His S80 was sitting in a parking area off the main road, only key somewhere on the ground between the car and wherever he'd walked earlier. Not at a dealer, not in a shop lot. Just a car with nobody getting into it.

He found a bar of service and got me on the phone. I already carry what I need for this generation of Volvo, so I drove straight to the pin.

When I got there the car was locked tight. I decoded the driver's door, cut a replacement blade on site, and then got into the programming side of things. On an all-keys-lost job like this, the first thing I do before touching anything is back up the module data. That step matters a lot on Volvos because the security module holds information you do not want to lose mid-job. Once the backup was done, I built out a working fob from a blank, registered it, and tested every function including the emergency blade in the door cylinder.

The whole job happened in that parking area. He watched the fob come together on the hood of his car. When it started he just kind of exhaled.

He mentioned he'd looked up what a dealer would charge and then add a tow on top since the car wasn't going anywhere. What I charged was a fraction of that. Not the point of the job, but he brought it up.

How long does a 2007 Volvo S80 key replacement take?▼

Add-a-key when you already have one working fob runs about 20 to 30 minutes on site. All-keys-lost is a different job. On this generation of Volvo, the security module needs to be accessed and backed up before any new key gets written in, and that process has its own timing built into the software. Realistically, budget an hour to an hour and a half for all-keys-lost so nothing gets rushed.
