I was already running a call near Goleta on a Saturday evening when a second ping came in from Hollister Village. A couple had come out from a wine bar and their 2015 S80 was sitting there completely dark. No welcome lights, no door handle response, nothing. They had already tried the fob a dozen times and figured the car had a bigger problem.
It did not have a bigger problem.
I got there in about fourteen minutes. The fob battery was the original CR2450, which on a ten-year-old car is not a surprise. Dead cell, but because the S80 smart key loses all outward signs of life when the battery drops that low, it can look like an immobilizer fault or a module issue rather than just a flat battery. I see that misread on forums constantly. Owners getting quoted for module diagnostics when the actual fix is a fresh CR2450.
I swapped the cell on the hood, re-synced the fob, and walked the car: door handle touch unlock on both sides, start response, lock, all of it. First press, the car lit up.
They had already been quoted a tow and a Monday dealer appointment. That version of the night would have cost them the weekend and a number I am not allowed to print here. Instead they drove home Saturday.
When you stock the right parts and know the platform, a dead fob at 9pm is not an emergency. It is just a job.
