Got a call one morning from a guy near the Goleta Valley Community Center. His 2012 S80 wouldn't respond to the push-to-start button. He said the dash lit up with "Key not accepted" and then went dark. He'd already swapped the CR2450 twice thinking it was the battery.
I pulled up in about 25 minutes. His fob was the KR55WK49266, six-button layout, part number 30659495. The emergency blade still turned the driver door, so we weren't locked out. But holding the dead fob against the start button, which is the backup trick Volvo owners learn from forums, did nothing either.
I decoded the HU101 keyway, got the diagnostics connected through OBD, and pulled up the CEM. The P3 platform on these second-gen S80s stores the key data in the CEM, not a separate immobilizer box. His original key profile had a communication fault logged. I pulled the CEM, ran it on the bench with the VVDI Prog and the solderless adapter for the P3 CEM board, cleared the fault, and re-paired his existing fob plus a spare he had sitting in a kitchen drawer at home that had never been programmed.
Whole thing took about 40 minutes hands-on. He sat on a bench nearby scrolling his phone the entire time. When I handed both keys back and the engine fired clean, he just nodded and said "good." That was it. No drama, no tow truck, no dealer wait.
