A Euro specialist shop out in Goleta, near the Storke Ranch area, called me in on a car that had already been touched once.
The S80 came in for a timing belt job. While it was there, the owner needed a replacement smart key made. The shop called a locksmith. That locksmith attempted an OBD-based key registration, got an error partway through, and left. Now the CEM was throwing faults and the car would not start at all. The shop was stuck with a customer's car that ran fine before anyone touched the key system.
When I got there, I could see what happened. An incomplete programming session had left the module in a fault state where it was rejecting every new registration attempt. There was no recovering that from the OBD port. I pulled the CEM, took it to my bench setup in the van, read the secured data off the module directly, cleared the corruption, and wrote it back clean. Then I generated a fresh key from the dump and registered the six-button fob to the car.
The CEM came back online and accepted the new key on the first attempt. I walked through every button function, confirmed the car started, and showed the shop lead exactly what the failed attempt had done so they would recognize it if it came up again.
Start to finish it was about two hours. The owner's alternative was a flatbed to the Volvo dealer, a possible module replacement, and probably a week without his car. He got it back the same afternoon, and the shop had a story they have told other customers since.
