Got a call from a guy near the California Oil Museum in Santa Paula. His 2010 Volvo S80 smart key had been acting up for a week. Short range on the lock and unlock, then the push-to-start button stopped recognizing the fob entirely. Dash just said "Key not identified" and sat there.
He tried holding the fob against the steering column. Nothing. Tried the second key his wife had in a drawer. Dead battery in that one too. So now he had two smart keys and zero ways to start the car.
I got out there and started with the basics. Popped open both KR55WK49266 fobs. His daily key had a CR2450 that was corroded around one contact pad. The backup key just had a completely flat battery, probably sitting in that drawer for three years. Cleaned the contacts on both, dropped in fresh CR2450 cells, and reseated the boards.
Both keys woke up immediately. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, all six buttons responding. Push-to-start fired on the first press. Then I walked both keys through range testing at the doors and the trunk to make sure the CEM was reading them at proper distance.
He kept saying he thought the whole car computer was fried. It was two batteries and some green corrosion on a contact pin. Took me about 20 minutes on site, and he paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted him over the phone for a diagnostic appointment three days out.
