She had just finished at the allergist's office in Goleta, near Ellwood Mesa Open Space, and was walking to the car with her daughter when the S80 stopped responding. Fob dead. Push-to-start showing "Key not accepted" on the dash. It was 5:30 in the evening and the medical building was locking up.
The Volvo dealer was already closed for the day. She called me.
I got there and opened the door with a non-destructive entry. Connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port under the dash and pulled communication with the CEM. Her smart key, the KR55WK49266 with the six buttons, had a corroded negative contact inside the fob housing. The CR2450 had leaked just enough to kill the signal. The Hitag2 chip wasn't transmitting at all.
I replaced the fob, wrote the new key data through the CEM's EEPROM, and registered it to the immobilizer. Then the real test: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, and push-to-start from both front seats. Walked the perimeter checking passive entry on all four door handles.
From her call to engine running was 48 minutes. She got home before dinner with her daughter instead of leaving the Volvo overnight in a closed medical parking lot. The dealer would have meant waiting until morning and paying a good chunk more on top of the tow.
