She was parked near the medical offices off Hollister in Goleta, wrapping up a late afternoon appointment with her daughter. It was already past 5:30 when she walked out and got nothing from the S80. No door response, no acknowledgment, just a dark car sitting there.
She tried the fob a few times. Nothing. The Volvo dealer was already closed for the evening, and she was looking at leaving the car overnight in a lot that was shutting down around her.

I got out there, got the door open using the mechanical insert key inside the fob, and took a look before doing anything else. The six-button fob had a CR2450 inside, and when I opened it up the battery contact had corrosion on it, enough to break the connection entirely. The fob wasn't transmitting. The car wasn't ignoring her. It genuinely wasn't hearing the key at all.
The contact wasn't salvageable, so I replaced the fob, programmed the new one to her vehicle through the diagnostic port, and walked every function. Lock, unlock, all six buttons, start authorization. Everything confirmed.
She drove home to Isla Vista before dinner instead of figuring out a ride and coming back the next morning to deal with a dealer service queue.
That part about the dealer was almost an afterthought. She hadn't even gotten that far. She just needed someone who could show up, work on a Volvo, and actually finish the job.
