Got a call from a guy stuck at an airport economy garage, over near the Mountain View neighborhood side of Fillmore, which is where he'd left his 2009 Volvo S80 before a week-long trip. Came back Monday, pressed every button on his fob, and nothing. Doors locked, no chirp, no lights, dead silence from the car.
His CR2450 had drained while the car sat. The Volvo dealer told him Thursday was the earliest opening. That's three days of staring at his own car.
I got to him in about 40 minutes. Pulled the emergency blade from the fob housing and got the driver door open manually. Plugged my IM608 into the OBD port and pulled up the CEM. The key was still registered, still recognized, but the module was holding a communication fault from the prolonged loss of fob signal. A battery swap alone wasn't going to shake that loose.
New CR2450 in, fault codes cleared through diagnostics, and I cycled the system. All six buttons came back. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, the works. Proximity start fired on the first press.
I handed him a spare CR2450 for the glovebox. He just sat in the driver seat for a second, like he was making sure the dash wasn't going to argue with him.
He drove home that evening. The S80 never left the parking space he'd pulled into a week earlier, and he spent a fraction of what the dealer route would have run him.
