I was already out in Moorpark when the call came in. Guy up in Peach Hill, parked in his driveway, holding a flip key with a snapped blade. The blade had sheared off at the pivot point, which happens on these 2004 XC70s when the metal fatigues after years of folding in and out. The broken half was still in his ignition.
That part always slows things down a little. Extract the broken blade first, inspect the cylinder, then cut a new blade and reassemble the flip housing. He had his original fob, so the transponder side was already registered to the car. The cutting and extraction happened right there on his street.
He mentioned he had called the dealer earlier that week about getting a spare made. They told him they would need to order the key and have him bring it in, probably mid-week at the earliest. He was already three days into waiting when the blade broke and ended the experiment.
