I got a call from a Euro specialist shop in Downtown Moorpark. They'd done a timing belt job on a customer's 2008 XC70 and called a locksmith to make a replacement key before returning the car. That locksmith tried an OBD-level programming attempt, got an error mid-write, and left. The car was dead. The fob is a 6-button unit, the factory fob for that car, and once the CEM came back online it accepted the new key registration on the first attempt. No drama.
I put the module back, tested every button, walked the doors, checked that the car started clean, and showed the shop guys exactly what the previous tool had done so they'd recognize it if it came up again.
Two hours total including module removal and reinstall. The alternative was a flatbed to the Volvo dealer, a probable CEM replacement, and the customer waiting the better part of a week. The shop called back two months later with another Volvo. That's how this business grows.
