She had just come out of the allergist with her daughter, late afternoon in Moorpark, and the XC70 was sitting in that medical building lot doing absolutely nothing. No response from the fob, no chirp, no flash of the lights. She tried the buttons a few more times the way everyone does. Nothing.

I got there, got the door open with the mechanical blade, and sat down with the fob before I touched anything else. Popped it open right on the center console. The CR2032 looked fine at a glance, but the positive contact pad inside had a white crust built up around the edge. Classic slow-drain corrosion, not a dramatic failure, just enough resistance to drop the voltage below what the board needed to transmit. The blade hinge looked okay, no cracked traces, so the board itself was still good.
Cleaned the contact, seated a fresh CR2032, and the remote lit right up. Then came the part that actually matters: walking all five buttons, checking that the immobilizer authorization was still solid, and confirming the engine started cleanly without any warning on the dash. Everything came back.
She got home before dinner instead of leaving the Volvo overnight in a closed lot waiting for a dealer appointment the next morning. The dealer would have had it until at least mid-day the following day, and the bill would have been a different conversation entirely.
