Got a call from a woman near the Moorpark Botanical Garden area. Her 2005 Volvo XC70 had one key left and the remote buttons were dead. She'd already replaced the CR2032 twice. Still nothing. Lock, unlock, panic, all five buttons just sat there.
She told me the Volvo dealer quoted her a wait of over a week for a new key blank to arrive, then a separate appointment to program it. She didn't have that kind of time with one key that half worked.
I met her in the parking area off the street. Popped open her LQNP2T-APU flip key on the hood and found the issue right away. The battery contact inside the fob housing had a hairline crack in the solder joint on the small circuit board. Every time she pressed a button, the connection flexed just enough to fail. New battery never mattered because the board couldn't carry the signal.
Reflowed the solder point, seated a fresh CR2032, and tested all five buttons from 30 feet out. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, and the Volvo logo button all responded clean. Then I cut and programmed a spare key matched to her CEM module through the diagnostic port so she'd have a backup.
She watched the whole thing from a bench. Total time on site was about 35 minutes. The CEM registered the new transponder the same way it would at any Volvo service bay. It does not check who's holding the equipment.
