I got a call early on a weekday morning from a guy running a food operation near North Broadway in Escondido. His key had snapped in the ignition of his 1997 Honda Civic. One half of the blade was stuck inside the cylinder, the other half was in his hand, and he was standing there trying to figure out if he should just force it. He did not force it. Smart call.
When I arrived, I could see the broken piece was seated pretty deep. The goal with an extraction like this is to get it out without disturbing the wafers inside the cylinder, because a damaged wafer means a cylinder replacement, and that turns a quick job into a much longer one. I worked it out clean using my extraction tools, then decoded the lock directly from the cylinder while I had it accessible.
Once I had the bitting, I cut a fresh key blade on site and verified it turned smoothly through every position. His remote fob was already on his keyring and completely unaffected - the fob on these Civics does not interact with the ignition at all, so there was nothing to reprogram there. The new blade went in, the car started, and he had a working spare cut from the same reading before I packed up.
He was back on the road well under an hour from when he called. He mentioned the dealer told him the last time he called them about a key issue that they would need the car brought in and would have to order parts. For a snapped blade in an older Civic, that kind of wait does not need to happen. It is one of the faster jobs I do.
